How to buy a Telegram username
Short Telegram usernames are collectible items on TON, and they change hands on Fragment, the marketplace Telegram built for them. This is what the process actually looks like, what it costs, and what makes one name worth more than the next.
What you are buying
A collectible username is not a rented handle. Ownership sits on the TON blockchain, and the owner can assign it to a personal account, a group or a channel, use it as t.me/name, and sell it on later. An account can hold several usernames at once, so buying one does not cost you the handle you already use.
The five steps
- A wallet
Open Wallet inside Telegram, or install Tonkeeper, and put TON in it. Fragment settles in TON only.
- Connect
Sign in to fragment.com with your Telegram account and connect the wallet to it.
- Find the name
Every username has its own page. It shows either a fixed sell price, set by an owner, or a minimum bid if nobody owns it yet.
- Buy or bid
A fixed price closes immediately. A bid holds your TON until the auction ends; if someone outbids you, Fragment returns it.
- Assign it
After the payment confirms, the name shows up under your assets and can be attached to an account, group or channel.
Auction or fixed price
Both exist side by side. A name nobody has claimed starts as an auction with a minimum bid. A name someone already owns can carry a sell price, which is a take-it-now number that skips the auction. On our board these are marked Min. bid and Buy now, so you know which one you are looking at before you click through.
What it costs on top of the price
Fragment charges the seller a commission on a completed sale. The buyer pays the price plus a small TON network fee for the transfer itself. There is no separate platform fee charged to the buyer, and no reputable seller needs a payment outside Fragment — if someone asks for one, that is the whole warning sign.
What sets the price
Length first. Four characters or fewer is the scarce end of the market and prices bend sharply there; each extra character costs a name some of its demand. Then meaning: a dictionary word, a first name or a category term arrives with recognition attached, while an invented string has to be given meaning by whoever buys it. Finally, a clean title — a handle that reads as somebody else's trademark is worth less, because the buyer inherits the argument along with it.

Questions
Do I need TON to buy a Telegram username?
Yes. Fragment settles in TON. You can fund it from Wallet inside Telegram or from an external TON wallet such as Tonkeeper, and connect that wallet to Fragment before bidding.
What are the fees?
Fragment takes a commission from the seller on a completed sale, and the TON network charges a small fee to move the item. A buyer pays the price shown plus that network fee.
What happens to a bid that loses?
Fragment holds bids for the length of the auction and returns them to the losing bidders when it closes.
How long does the transfer take?
A fixed-price purchase transfers within minutes of the payment confirming on TON. An auction runs its full term first, then settles the same way.
Can I keep my old username too?
Yes. A Telegram account can hold several username aliases, so a collectible name can sit alongside the one you already use.
Is buying a username off Fragment safe?
A private transfer needs one side to move first, and that side can be robbed. Fragment holds the name and the money at once and swaps them in a single step, which removes the question of trust. That is why every name on this site links to its Fragment page.
